SUMMARY : Proclaims August 15, 2012, as India's Independence
Day, and urges all Californians to join in celebrating India's
independence.
The Senate amendments delete the principal coauthor and make a
technical change.
AS PASSED BY THE ASSEMBLY , this resolution proclaims August 15,
2012, as India's Independence Day, and makes the following
legislative findings:
1)One of the most important national holidays in India, India's
Independence Day is celebrated on August 15 of each year to
commemorate its independence; and California is home to the
largest population of Asian Indians in the United States.
2)On August 15, 1947, at the stroke of midnight, the first Prime
Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, gave his famous Tryst
with Destiny speech proclaiming Indian's independence which
was celebrated by 400 million Indians; and today, India's
Independence Day is celebrated by a billion people living in
India and many people living in other parts of the world.
