SUBJECT : Corporal Jared Verbeek Memorial Overcrossing

           SOURCE : Author

DIGEST : This resolution designates an overcrossing on
State Highway Route 198 in Tulare County as the Corporal
          Jared Verbeek Memorial Overcrossing.

ANALYSIS : By naming an overcrossing in Visalia for
Corporal Verbeek, this resolution seeks to memorialize his
sacrifice in the line of duty.

From an early age, Jared Verbeek sought the opportunity to
wear a uniform in service of his country, including joining
the Boy Scouts of America and earning 13 merit badges
within his first month. Upon graduation from high school,
Corporal Verbeek received a congressional appointment to
                                                           CONTINUED

the Naval Academy but instead chose to enlist with the
United States Marine Corps. Corporal Verbeek graduated
Marine Corps recruit training on February 1, 2008, and was
assigned as a recruiter assistant to his hometown Visalia
recruiting substation. Later, Corporal Verbeek received
combat training at Camp Pendleton and military police
training at Fort Lenard Wood, Missouri. His first duty
assignment was with the Military Police (MP) Company at
Camp Pendleton. Corporal Verbeek volunteered to be an MP
liaison for the First Battalion of the Fifth Marine
Regiment, which deployed on March 17, 2011, to Afghanistan.
On June 21, 2011, Corporal Verbeek gave the ultimate
sacrifice for our country when he died from wounds
sustained while conducting combat operations in Helmand
          province, Afghanistan.

This resolution designates the South Giddings Avenue
overcrossing on State Highway Route 198 in the City of
Visalia as the "Corporal Jared Verbeek Memorial
Overcrossing." The resolution further requests the
Department of Transportation to erect appropriate signs
only upon receiving donations from non-state sources
          sufficient to cover the cost.
