ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON RULES
Nancy Skinner, Chair
ACR 139 (Beall) - As Amended: May 8, 2012
SUBJECT : Foster Care Month.
SUMMARY : Designates May 2012 as Foster Care Month in
California and encourages the people of California to work
together to ensure a brighter future for foster youth.
Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative
findings:
1)During Foster Care Month, the efforts of California's adoptive
and foster families, relative caregivers, and public and
private entities that are improving the lives of youth people
in foster care are recognized.
2)California has the largest foster care population of any
state; and most children in foster care are removed for a
variety of reasons including abuse, abandonment, or neglect.
3)Each year between four and five thousand foster youth reach
the age of 18 in the foster care system without ever being
supported by a family that loves, nurtures, protects and
guides them; and, children "aging out" of foster care need and
deserve support as they work to secure affordable housing,
higher education, and adequate employment.
