DIGEST : This bill requires the Department of
Transportation (Caltrans), upon receipt of nonstate funds
sufficient to cover the cost, to erect up to four signs or
markers on State Highway Route (SR) 101 in the City of San
Jose to provide recognition of the historical importance of
the Little Saigon corridor.
Senate Floor Amendments of 6/13/12 strike the entire
contents of the bill and insert new language regarding
highway signs.
ANALYSIS : Existing law provides that Caltrans has full
possession and control of the state highway system and
associated property.
Existing law authorizes Caltrans to place signs on state
highways directing motorists to culturally unique and

historically significant communities within the geographic
boundaries of a city, county, or city and county under
certain conditions.
This bill:
1. Requires that Caltrans, through the erection of highway
signs or appropriate markers on SR 101, provide
recognition of the historical importance of the Little
Saigon corridor in the City of San Jose on Story Road
between SR 101 and Senter Road.
2. Requires a sign or marker be placed along each Story
Road exit from SR 101, with no more than four signs or
markers to be erected by Caltrans, and provides the
recognition project may be complemented by local
designation efforts and other similar actions.
3. Requires that Caltrans determine the cost of appropriate
signs or markers to implement this bill consistent with
the signing requirements for the state highway system,
and upon receiving donations from nonstate sources
sufficient to cover the cost, shall erect those signs or
markers.
