DIGEST : This resolution names the interchange of State
Highway Route (SR) 99 and SR 119 in Kern County as the
Deputy Daniel Lee Archuleta Memorial Interchange.
Senate Floor Amendments of 5/2/12 add Deputy Archuletas
parents and brother to the named surviving family members.
ANALYSIS : Deputy Daniel Lee Archuleta was born in
Huntington Beach on Christmas Day 1968, Daniel Lee
Archuleta grew up in Huntington Beach and Seal Beach. He
received an Associate of Arts degree from Golden West
College and his Bachelor's Degree from CSU Long Beach in
1999. Two years later he graduated from the Los Angeles

County Sheriff's Department Academy and then worked for
that department until 2002. Deputy Archuleta began serving
as a sheriff's deputy in Kern County on October 5, 2002.
He died on September 12, 2004, when, while responding to
another deputy's request for immediate backup, his patrol
car overturned on Tupman Road near the town of Tupman. The
California Highway Patrol investigated the accident but
never discerned a cause. Daniel Archuleta is survived by
his wife, Laura, and their two daughters, his parents, Don
and Linda, and his brother Matt.
This resolution designates the interchange of SR 99 and SR
119 located in Kern County just south of the City of
Bakersfield as the Deputy Daniel Lee Archuleta Memorial
Interchange. The resolution further requests that the
Department of Transportation erect appropriate signs upon
receiving donations from non-state sources to cover the
costs.
