           SENATE VOTE  :  36-0
           
          SUBJECT  :  State Route 50

           SUMMARY  :  Designates the Hazel Avenue interchange on SR 50 as 
          the Senator Dave Cox Interchange.  Specifically,  this bill  :  

          1)Recounts the life and career of Dave Cox, who passed away 
            while serving his second term in the California State Senate.  


          2)Designates the interchange at Hazel Avenue and SR 50 as the 
            Senator Dave Cox Interchange.  

          3)Requests the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to 
            determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the 
            signing requirements for the state highway system showing this 
            special designation and, upon receiving donations from 
            nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those 
            signs.  

           EXISTING LAW  :  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility to operate 
          and maintain state highways.  This includes the installation and 
          maintenance of highway signs.  

           FISCAL EFFECT  :  Unknown.  This bill was withdrawn from the 
          Senate Appropriations Committee pursuant to Senate Rule 28.8.  

           COMMENTS  :  Senator Dave Cox was born in Oklahoma in 1938.  Dave 
          Cox came to California and attended the University of San Diego. 
           He maintained a life insurance business while also being active 
          in community and church activities.  He served in local elected 
          office both on the Sacramento Municipal Utility District Board 
          and on the Sacramento County of Board of Supervisors.  In 1998, 
          he won election to the State Assembly, where he served for six 
          years, including a stint as the Assembly Republican Leader.  In 
          2004, Cox won election to the California State Senate, where he 
          represented the first district until his death in 2010.

          In 2009, Senator Cox was awarded the Patti Mattingly 
          Distinguished Legislator Award by the Regional Council of Rural 
          Counties. Senator Cox was recognized as the California Building 
          Industry Association Outstanding Legislator of 2003, and as 
          Legislator of the Year by the American Electronics Association 
          in 2002, the Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of 
          California in 2001, and the California Business Properties 
          Association in 2001.  He was awarded the President's Award by 
          the California State Association of Counties in 2001 in 
          recognition of his commitment to developing sound public policy 
          and service to the citizenry of California.  In 2004, the 
          Northern California Power Agency named Senator Cox as its State 
          Legislator of the Year.  The California State Sheriffs' 
          Association recognized Senator Cox as one of their Outstanding 
          Senators in 2005, 2007, and 2008.
