           SENATE VOTE  :   38-0
           
          SUBJECT  :   100-year anniversary of the Sikh American community.

           SUMMARY  :   Recognizes October 13, 2012, as the 100-year 
          anniversary of the Sikh American community, and calls upon the 
          people of California to commemorate the day with appropriate 
          celebrations.  Specifically,  this resolution  makes the following 
          legislative findings:

          1)October 13, 2012, will be recognized as the 100-year 
            anniversary of the Sikh American community who first arrived 
            in the United States through the Angel Island Immigration 
            Station in San Francisco in 1899.

          2)The Stockton Gurdwara Sahib, which was founded in 1912 by Teja 
            Singh, is recognized as the first permanent Sikh American 
            settlement and gurdwara in the United States; and, the 
            gurdwara furnished provisions to the people of Stockton so 
            that no one would have to go without.

          3)The Sikh Amercian community recognizes the importance of 
            education and established the Sri Guru Govind Singh 
            Educational Scholarship for students of the University of 
            California, Berkeley; and, the first scholarships were awarded 
            on January 1, 1912, without regard to gender, ethnicity, or 
            religion to a Christian, to a Sikh, to a Muslim, and to three 
            Hindus.

          4)Within a short time of their arrival to the United States, the 
            Sikh Americans also started their own newspaper and organized 
            their own political party, The Ghadar Party.

          5)The Sikh American community continues to make significant 
            contributions to the California and United States' economies 
            and to society through military service, as business owners, 
            transportation professionals, doctors, attorneys, engineers, 
            teachers, farmers, and in a great many other notable 
            capacities.
