Relative to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge.

ACR 37, as introduced, Harkey. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Memorial Bridge.
This measure would designate the Mission Avenue bridge at
Interstate 5 in the City of Oceanside as the Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Memorial Bridge. The measure would request the Department of
Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs showing
this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. achieved international
recognition as a leader of the American civil rights movement, which
sought, through nonviolent measures and civil disobedience, to bring
about social, political, and economic equality for different racial,
cultural, and ethnic members of society; and
WHEREAS, This philosophy and these ideals of Dr. King advanced
equal rights in education and labor, as well civil rights; and
WHEREAS, As an ordained Baptist minister, Dr. King's profound
leadership inspired supporters throughout the nation to engage in
marches, peaceful demonstrations, and boycotts to protest racial
discrimination; and
WHEREAS, Those efforts contributed to the enactment of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Right Act of 1965; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King's philosophy and values provide our youth with
ideals to bridge into adulthood; and
WHEREAS, It is fitting that the legacy of Dr. King be proclaimed
by the naming of the Mission Avenue bridge in his honor now; and
WHEREAS, The bridge will be visible to Oceanside visitors and
residents to serve as a reminder of this American icon; now,
therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
Mission Avenue bridge at Interstate 5 in the City of Oceanside,
California as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge; and be
it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to
determine the cost of erecting appropriate signs, consistent with the
signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this
special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
sources covering that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
for appropriate distribution.
