House Resolution No. 12—Relative to the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program.

WHEREAS, 2013 marks the centennial year of the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program; and

WHEREAS, The University of California 4-H Youth Development Program is deserving of special public recognition and the highest commendations for its distinguished record of helping young people become healthy, happy, and thriving citizens who make a positive difference in their communities; and

WHEREAS, The mission of the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program is to engage youth in reaching their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development; and

P2    3WHEREAS, More than 72,000 young people are active annually
4in 4-H programs in California, and there have been more than one
5million 4-H alumni in this state since the founding of 4-H; and

6WHEREAS, Youth-adult partnerships and youth-centered
7educational programs are available through local clubs, after school
8programs, and camps; and

9WHEREAS, The Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources
10of the University of California, a land-grant university, delivers
11the 4-H Youth Development Program through the California
12Cooperative Extension System; and

13WHEREAS, There are 13,400 adult volunteers in California
14who contribute countless hours and effort each year to educating
15young 4-H members; and

16WHEREAS, 4-H emphasizes programming to promote healthy
17living, science, engineering, technology literacy, citizenship, and
18leadership through learning-by-doing; and

19WHEREAS, 4-H addresses issues facing young people wherever
20they may live, including cities, suburbs, and rural communities;
21and

22WHEREAS, 4-H values young people as a resource capable of
23providing solutions to the critical issues facing our communities;
24and

25WHEREAS, 4-H members create positive changes in every
26community in the State of California; and

27WHEREAS, 4-H members build skills that help them to thrive
28as competent, confident, caring leaders of character who are
29connected to others and contribute to their communities; now,
30therefore, be it

31Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the
32University of California 4-H Youth Development Program be
33commended, on the occasion of its centennial, for the outstanding
34contributions it has made to young people throughout the state,
35and that it be extended sincere best wishes for the next 100 years;
36and be it further

P3    1Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
2of this resolution to the author and to the University of California
34-H Youth Development Program.
