10,000 years. When the Europeans arrived in California, they
subjected members of the Nation to assimilation and
discrimination. The Europeans eventually forced them to leave
their ancestral lands and go into hiding in local mountains and
canyons. The Esselen people were formally recognized by the
federal government in 1883, and were placed under the
jurisdiction of the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1906.
Today, the Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation represents more than
600 enrolled tribal members of both Esselen and Carmelano
descent from at least 19 villages in a contiguous region
surrounding Monterey Bay.
This resolution designates the portion of State Highway Route 68
between Blanco Road in the City of Salinas and Anza Drive in the
County of Monterey as the Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Highway.
This resolution further requests that the Department of
Transportation erect appropriate signs upon receiving donations
from non-state sources to cover the costs.
