           SUMMARY  

          This measure designates the following sections of state highways  
          in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties:

          1)As the "Henry J. Mello Highway," the portion of State Route  
            (SR) 1 from the Pajaro River to Struve Road in Monterey  
            County.

          2)As the "Oscar Rios Highway," the portion of SR 129 from  
            Blackburn Street to the junction of with SR 1 in the City of  
            Watsonville  (Santa Cruz County).

          3)As the "John Steinbeck Highway," the portion of SR 101 from  
            Sala Road to John Street in the City of Salinas (Monterey  
            County).

          4)As the "Gateway to the Pinnacles Highway," the portion of SR  
            101 from Exit 305 to Exit 310 in Monterey County.

           FISCAL EFFECT  

          Minor State Highway Account costs to Caltrans to make and erect  
          appropriate signs; these costs are fully covered by donations.

           COMMENTS  

           Purpose  . This measure designates four specific sections of state  
          highway to honor author John Steinbeck, former State Senator  
          Henry J. Mello, former Watsonville Mayor and City Councilmember  
          Oscar Rios, and to commemorate the former Pinnacles National  
          Monument, which was recently designated as a national park.
