House Resolution No. 56—Relative to Women’s Equality Day.

P1    1WHEREAS, The first women’s rights convention on July 19,
21848, was called by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott to
3win equal rights for and expand the role of women in society; and

4WHEREAS, On that date, the fight for women’s rights came
5together as an organized effort; and

6WHEREAS, The addition of the Nineteenth Amendment to the
7United States Constitution on August 26, 1920, secured for women
8the right to vote; and

9WHEREAS, The passage of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964
10barred employment discrimination against women; and

11WHEREAS, The enactment of Title IX of the federal Education
12Amendments of 1972 guaranteed equal opportunity in education
13and sports; and

14WHEREAS, Many women have planned, organized, lectured,
15written, marched, lobbied, canvassed voters, staged parades,
16become candidates for political office, argued court cases, and
17more, in order to irrevocably change for the better the world of
18today’s women; and

19WHEREAS, Today’s women are living the legacy of equal
20rights achieved against all odds; and

21WHEREAS, The women of the United States have designated
22August 26 as a symbol of the continued fight for equal rights; and

23WHEREAS, The United States Congress recognizes that August
2426 of each year is designated as Women’s Equality Day and the
P2    1President of the United States annually issues a proclamation
2commemorating August 26, 1920, as the day when the women of
3the United States were first given the right to vote and that same
4date in 1970 when a nationwide demonstration for women’s rights
5took place; and

6WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Sacramento
7County join women throughout the United States in celebrating
8the continuing crusade for equality for women in all areas of public
9and private life; now, therefore, be it

10Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That, upon
11the anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States
12Constitution, the Assembly recognizes August 26, 2014, as
13Women’s Equality Day and its historic importance to women’s
14rights; and be it further

15Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
16of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
