Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 136—Relative to National Strawberry Month.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 136, as introduced, Eggman. National Strawberry Month.

This measure, in celebration of National Strawberry Month, would recognize the contributions of California strawberry farmers and the California Strawberry Commission in supporting a quintessential California crop that sustains families, communities, the environment, the California economy, and the opportunity for immigrants to pursue the American Dream.

P1    1WHEREAS, May is National Strawberry Month; and

2WHEREAS, California grows more strawberries than any other
3place in the world, including all 49 other states combined, and
4more organic strawberries than all 49 other states combined; and

5WHEREAS, California strawberry farmers grow nearly 90
6percent of all strawberries produced in the United States; and

7WHEREAS, California’s 400 family farmers and 60 shippers
8and processors of strawberries are responsible for contributing
9$2.3 billion to the economy and generating thousands of jobs
10ranging from researchers and harvesters to exporters and grocers;
11and

P2    1WHEREAS, California strawberry farmers represent the diverse
2cultures found in the Golden State; and

3WHEREAS, Many California strawberry farm owners started
4out as field workers- a testament to an industry that presents
5opportunity for workers to own their own businesses and fulfill
6the American dream; and

7WHEREAS, California’s strawberry farmers are leading the
8world in environmental research dedicated to improving and
9promoting sustainable farming practices; and

10WHEREAS, Thanks to California strawberry farmers, some
1140,000 acres of land along the Central Coast are protected and
12preserved; and

13WHEREAS, Strawberry farmers, shippers, and processors are
14represented by the California Strawberry Commission, a state
15government entity that promotes strawberries as an important part
16of healthy nutrition and lifestyles; and

17WHEREAS, In 1994, the California Strawberry Commission
18formed the California Strawberry Scholarship Program which has
19given over $1.5 million to farmers’ children bound for college or
20trade schools; now, therefore, be it

21Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
22thereof concurring,
That the Legislature, in celebration of National
23Strawberry Month, recognizes the contributions of California
24strawberry farmers and the California Strawberry Commission in
25supporting a quintessential California crop that sustains families,
26communities, the environment, the California economy, and the
27opportunity for immigrants to pursue the American Dream; and
28be it further

29Resolved, That the Chief of the Assembly transmit copies of
30this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
