           SUBJECT  :    National Strawberry Month

           DIGEST  :    This resolution celebrates May 2014, as National  
          Strawberry Month; and recognizes the contributions of California  
          strawberry farmers and the California Strawberry Commission in  
          supporting a quintessential California crop that sustains  
          families, communities, the environment, the California economy,  
          and the opportunity for immigrants to pursue the American Dream.

           ANALYSIS  :    This resolution makes the following legislative  
          findings: 

          1.California grows more strawberries than any other place in the  
            world; and producing 90% of the strawberries grown in the  
            United States. 

          2.California's 400 family farmers and 60 shippers and processors  
            of strawberries are responsible for contributing $2.3 billion  
            to the economy and generating thousands of jobs from  
            researchers to harvesters.

          3.California's strawberry farmers are leading the world in  
            environmental research dedicated to improving and promoting  
            sustainable farming practices; and, thanks to these farmers  
            some 40,000 acres along the coast are protected and preserved.  


          4.In 1994, the California Strawberry Commission formed the  
            California Strawberry Scholarship Program which has given over  
            $1.5 million to farmers' children bound for college or trade  
            schools.

          This resolution celebrates May 2014, as National Strawberry  
          Month and recognizes the contributions of California strawberry  
          farmers and the California Strawberry Commission in supporting a  
          quintessential California crop that sustains families,  
          communities, the environment, the California economy, and the  
          opportunity for immigrants to pursue the American Dream.
