Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 145—Relative to highways.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 145, as introduced, Achadjian. Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial: highway signs.

This measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate directional signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, on State Highway Route 101 at its intersection with westbound State Highway Route 41 in the City of Atascadero, to the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, The Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial, located
2at 8038 Portola Road in the City of Atascadero, was dedicated on
3November 8, 2008; and

4WHEREAS, The memorial consists of three elements, which
5are the Pathway to Freedom, the Faces of Freedom sculpture, and
6the Heroes Wall; and

7WHEREAS, The memorial is the result of the efforts of the
8Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation, created in April 2006,
9with a goal of building a world class veterans memorial on the
10California central coast; and

P2    1WHEREAS, The foundation is comprised of two groups of
2veterans and community members, including retired, active duty,
3and reserve servicemembers, military family members, local and
4national corporate sponsors, other members of the community,
5and sculptor Mark Greenway; and

6WHEREAS, The memorial is intended to honor the nation’s
7servicemembers by serving as a symbol of the public’s gratitude
8to those who, through their service and sacrifice, put their country
9first, and to teach youth about the nation’s core values; and

10WHEREAS, It is appropriate for the Department of
11Transportation to post directional signs to the memorial from State
12Highway Route 101, commonly known as U.S. 101; now, therefore,
13be it

14Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
15thereof concurring,
That the Department of Transportation is
16requested to determine the cost of appropriate directional signs,
17consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway
18system, on State Highway Route 101 at its intersection with
19westbound State Highway Route 41 (Morro Road exit) in the City
20of Atascadero, to the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial and,
21upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover
22the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further

23Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
24of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
25for appropriate distribution.
