This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 99 from the Fresno/Tulare County line to the Mountain View Avenue Overcrossing in the County of Fresno as the CHP Officers Brian Law and Juan Gonzalez Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1 1WHEREAS, CHP Officer Brian Mitchio Law was born on July
22, 1979, in Redwood City, California; and
3WHEREAS, Prior to joining the California Highway Patrol,
4Officer Law served for five years and three months in the United
5States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Sergeant, and the United
6States Air Force, in which he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant;
7and
8WHEREAS, Officer Law, badge number 18896, graduated from
9the California Highway Patrol Academy on April 18, 2008 and,
10upon graduation, was assigned to the Oakland Area, where he
P2 1served for almost five years before being transferred to Fresno
2Area 435; and
3WHEREAS, CHP Officer Juan Jaime Gonzalez was born on
4February 10, 1981, in Visalia, California; and
5WHEREAS, Officer Gonzalez, badge number 18935, graduated
6from the California Highway Patrol Academy on April 18, 2008
7and, upon graduation, was assigned to the San Jose Area, where
8he served for more than two years before being transferred to the
9Fresno Area; and
10WHEREAS, Officers Law and Gonzalez were classmates at the
11CHP Academy, partners, and good friends; and
12WHEREAS, On February 17, 2014, the state suffered a tragic
13loss when CHP Officers Brian Law and Juan Gonzalez were killed
14in an accident while responding to an emergency call, thereby
15making the ultimate sacrifice while performing their sworn duty;
16and
17WHEREAS, Officer Law is survived by his wife, Rebecca Ann,
18daughter, Samantha (age 2), son, Brandon (age 9), and
19step-daughter, Lauren Lajara (age 10); and
20WHEREAS, Officer Gonzalez is survived by his mother, Maria
21Lourdes Gonzalez, of Tulare, and sister, Sandra Judith Gonzalez,
22also of Tulare; and
23WHEREAS, In recognition of the contributions, bravery, and
24sacrifice of Officers Law and Gonzalez in serving the California
25Highway Patrol and the citizens of California, it would be fitting
26to designate a portion of State Highway Route 99, in the County
27of Fresno, in their honor; now, therefore, be it
28Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
29thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
30portion of State Highway Route 99 from the Fresno/Tulare County
31Line to the Mountain View Avenue Overcrossing in the County
32of Fresno as the CHP Officers Brian Law and Juan Gonzalez
33Memorial Highway; and be it further
34Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
35to determine the costs of erecting the appropriate signs, consistent
36with the signing requirements for the state highway system,
37showing these special designations and, upon receiving donations
38from non state sources covering the costs, to erect those signs; and
39be it further

2of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
