          SUBJECT  :  CHP Officers Brian M. Law and Juan J. Gonzalez  
          Memorial Highway

           SUMMARY  :  Designates a specific portion of State Route (SR) 99  
          in Fresno County as the "CHP Officers Brian M. Law and Juan J.  
          Gonzalez Memorial Highway."  Specifically,  this bill  :

          1)Recounts the lifetime accomplishments Officers Brian M. Law  
            and Juan J. Gonzalez, both family men and dedicated California  
            Highway Patrol (CHP) officers.  

          2)Designates a portion of SR 99 between the Fresno/Tulare County  
            line and Mountain View Avenue Overcrossing in Fresno County as  
            the CHP Officer Brian M. Law and Juan J. Gonzalez Memorial  
            Highway.  

          3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation  
            (Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent  
            with the signing requirements for the state highway system,  
            showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations  
            from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those  
            signs.  

           EXISTING LAW  :  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways.  This includes the installation  
          and maintenance of highway signs.  

           FISCAL EFFECT  :  Costs to make and erect the appropriate signs  
          are covered by donations.  

           COMMENTS  :  Born on July 2, 1979 in Redwood City, California,  
          Officer Law signed up and served in both the United States Air  
          Force and Marine Corps.  Officer Law graduated from the CHP  
          Academy in 2008 and was initially assigned to the Oakland area.   
          Born on February 10, 1981, Officer Gonzalez graduated from  
          Fresno State University, joined the CHP in 2008, and was  
          assigned to the San Jose area.  Officer Law and Officer Gonzalez  
          were classmates during their training at the CHP Academy and  
          were ultimately both assigned to CHP's Central Division.  On

          February 17, 2014, Officers Law and Gonzalez were responding to  
          an accident in Fresno County when the Officers swerved to avoid  
          a pedestrian that had been involved in the accident, struck a  
          guardrail, and suffered fatal injuries due to the vehicle  
          overturning.  This bill designating a specific portion of SR 99  
          in honor of Officer Law and Officer Gonzalez acknowledges the  
          significant role they played in their community and for their  
          country.
