Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 175—Relative to Red Ribbon Week.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 175, as introduced, Ian Calderon. Red Ribbon Week.

This measure would proclaim October 23 to October 31, 2014, as Red Ribbon Week, and would encourage all Californians to help build drug-free communities and participate in drug prevention activities.

P1    1WHEREAS, Californians for Drug-Free Youth, Inc. (CADFY),
2a statewide parent-community organization, the office of the
3Governor, the office of the Attorney General, the State Department
P1    1of Education, the California Parent Teacher Association, and over
2100 other statewide agencies, departments, and organizations have
3been strong advocates for Red Ribbon Week; and

4WHEREAS, The National Family Partnership, Inc., initiated
5the Red Ribbon Campaign after Drug Enforcement Administration
6Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was killed in Mexico by drug
7traffickers in 1985; and

8WHEREAS, Parents, youths, schools, businesses, law
9enforcement, religious institutions, service organizations, senior
10citizens, medical and military personnel, sports teams, and others
11concerned about the effects of drugs on our communities will
12demonstrate their commitment to drug-free, healthy lifestyles by
13wearing and displaying red ribbons during this weeklong
14celebration; and

15WHEREAS, The theme of this year’s effort is “Love Yourself.
16Be Drug Free”; and

17WHEREAS, Securing a safe and healthy future for our children
18is directly threatened by drug abuse, and awareness of this problem
19will help individuals in fighting drug abuse; and

20WHEREAS, The objective of Red Ribbon Week 2014 will be
21to promote this view through drug prevention, education, parental
22involvement, and communitywide support; and

23WHEREAS, The Assembly of the State of California has further
24committed its resources to ensure the success of the Red Ribbon
25Week celebration; now, therefore, be it

26Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
27thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby proclaims its
28support for the Red Ribbon Week celebration by proclaiming the
29period of October 23 to 31, 2014, inclusive, as Red Ribbon Week;
30and be it further

31Resolved, That the Legislature encourages all Californians to
32help build drug-free communities and to participate in drug
33prevention activities by making a visible statement that we are
34firmly committed to healthy, productive, and drug-free lifestyles;
35and be it further

36Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
37of this resolution to the Governor, and to the author for appropriate
38distribution throughout the state.
