Existing law generally sets forth the duties of a coroner. Existing law specifically requires a coroner to hold an inquest under certain circumstances and authorizes a coroner holding an inquest to, among other things, issue subpoenas.
This bill would, for purposes relating to the duty of a coroner to hold an inquest, provide that a coroner’s appointed deputy or authorized deputy shall include a deputy coroner or part-time or volunteer personnel of thebegin insert sheriffend insert coroner’sbegin delete office,end deletebegin insert office who is a reserve officer,end insert as specified.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:
Section 27513 is added to the Government Code,
2to read:
For purposes of this article only, a coroner’s appointed
2deputy or authorized deputy shall includebegin delete allend deletebegin insert bothend insert of the following:
3(a) Any deputy coroner who is regularly employed and paid in
4that capacity.
5(b) Any part-time or volunteer personnel of thebegin insert sheriffend insert coroner’s
6office whobegin delete meet the same background, training, and certification
7requirements established by the Commission on
Peace Officer
8Standards and Training for regularly employed deputy coronersend delete
9begin insertis a level I reserve officer, as described in paragraph (1) of
10subdivision (a) of Section 832.6 of the Penal Codeend insert. The
11Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training shall not
12reimburse any individual agency for training or certification of
13any part-time or volunteer personnel.
