P1 1WHEREAS, According to the Pew Hispanic Center, in 2011,
2there were 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants living in the
3United States; and
4WHEREAS, Deportations have reached record levels under
5President Obama, rising to an annual average of nearly 400,000
6since 2009; and
7WHEREAS, According to Congress members Raul M. Grijalva
8and Yvette Clarke, although the Obama Administration reportedly
9prioritized deporting only criminals, many individuals with no
10criminal history have been consistently deported; and
11WHEREAS, Increased deportations and a continuously broken
12immigration system exacerbate the living conditions of United
13States citizen children whose parents have been deported; and
14WHEREAS, Separation of children from their parents,
15irrespective of immigration status, always results in severe
16consequences for young children who are left with no parental
17guidance or care and a highly unstable financial situation; and
18WHEREAS, As immigration continues to be at the center of a
19national debate, President Obama and Congress must implement
20a more humanitarian immigration policy that keeps families
21together; and
22WHEREAS, California is home to approximately 10.3 million
23immigrants of which approximately 2.6 million are unauthorized
24to live in the United States; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Many members of Congress recently signed a letter
2requesting President Obama to suspend any further deportations;
3and
4WHEREAS, California is home to a large number of
5unauthorized immigrants from all parts of the world, this state
6should therefore make it a priority to keep families together and
7continue to press President Obama and Congress for a solution to
8our broke federal immigration system; now, therefore, be it
9Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
10urges President Obama to take executive action to suspend any
11further deportations of unauthorized individuals with no serious
12criminal history; and be it further
13Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
14this resolution to the President and Vice President of the United
15States, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to the
16Majority Leader of the Senate, and to each Senator and
17Representative from California in the Congress of the United
18States, and to the author for appropriate distribution.
