P1 1WHEREAS, Public office is a public trust; and
2WHEREAS, That public trust is eroded by actions that appear
3to place the private interests of public officials above the public
4good; and
5WHEREAS, The California State Senate has established
6Standards of Conduct for the Senate; and
7WHEREAS, The Standards of Conduct specifically state that
8no Senator or officer or employee of the Senate should accept
9anything from anyone that would interfere with the exercise of his
10or her independent judgment; and
11WHEREAS, The Standards of Conduct further state that no
12Senator should use the prestige of his or her office, and no officer
13or employee of the Senate should use the status of his or her
14position, for material or financial gain or private benefit; and
15WHEREAS, The Standards of Conduct further state that each
16Senator and each officer and employee of the Senate shall uphold
17the Constitution of California and the Constitution of the United
18States and shall adhere to the spirit and the letter of the laws, rules,
19and regulations governing officeholder conduct; and
20WHEREAS, The Standards of Conduct further state that each
21Senator and each officer and employee of the Senate shall conduct
22himself or herself in the performance of his or her duties in a
23manner that does not discredit the Senate; and
P2 1WHEREAS, The public trust and the honor and integrity of the
2California State Senate must be upheld by the Senate and by its
3Members, officers, and employees; and
4WHEREAS, The ability of the California State Senate to operate
5as a legislative body must be vigorously protected; and
6WHEREAS, Senator Ronald S. Calderon has violated the public
7trust and undermined the honor and integrity of the California State
8Senate; now, therefore, be it
9Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, a majority of
10the membership concurring, That the Senate hereby suspends
11Senator Ronald S. Calderon from exercising any of the powers of
12his office as a Member of the Senate until such time as his pending
13criminal indictment has been adjudicated.
