           SENATE VOTE  :  35-0
           
          SUBJECT  :  Signal Hill Police Officer Anthony "Tony" Giniewicz  
          Memorial Highway

           SUMMARY  :  Designates a portion of Interstate 405 in the County  
          of Los Angeles as the Signal Hill Police Officer Anthony "Tony"  
          Giniewicz Memorial Highway.  Specifically,  this bill  :  

          1)Describes the role of law enforcement officers in protecting  
            public safety.  

          2)Describes the life and service of Officer Giniewicz and that  
            he was shot in the line of duty.  

          3)Requests the California Department of Transportation  
            (Caltrans) to determine the cost of appropriate signs,  
            consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway  
            system, showing the special designation and, upon receiving  
            those donations from non-state sources covering that cost, to  
            erect those signs.  

           EXISTING LAW  :  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways including the installation and  
          maintenance of highway signs.  

           FISCAL EFFECT  :  Costs to make and erect the appropriate signs  
          are covered by donations.  

           COMMENTS  :  Signal Hill Police Officer Anthony "Tony" Giniewicz  
          was shot in the line of duty while responding to a robbery in  
          the city of Long Beach on February 19, 1985.  After being shot,  
          Officer Giniewicz was paralyzed from the chest down and, as a  
          result, remained in poor health until passing away as a result  
          of complications on December 7, 2011.  

          Officer Giniewicz is remembered as a loving son to his mother,  
          Nellie Giniewicz; a caring father to his son Anthony, his  
          step-son John Peters, and his step-daughter Barbara Crumbacker;

          and as a thoughtful sibling to his sisters Paula Zwicker, Linda  
          Kravitz, Elaine Giniewicz, Christine Giniewicz, Diane Racicot,  
          and Laurie Wessels.
