Assembly Amendments clarify the designation is for Interstate
405 rather than State Highway Route 405.
ANALYSIS : Signal Hill Police Officer Anthony "Tony" Giniewicz
passed away on December 7, 2011 from complications related to
being shot in the line of duty while responding to a robbery in
Long Beach on February 19, 1985. After being shot, Officer
Giniewicz endured paralysis from the waist down for more than 26
years, until his death.
On February 19, 1985, Officer Giniewicz was struck in the chest
by a shotgun blast in a gunfight with three gang members who
robbed his off duty partner in the restaurant parking lot.
Officer Giniewicz and his partner, Officer Steve Owens, had gone
to the restaurant after going off duty. When Officer Owens left
the restaurant a short while later, he was assaulted by three
armed men in the parking lot. The three men took Officer Owens'
wallet and personal handgun. Officer Owens ran inside to tell
Officer Giniewicz about the robbery. When the two went back
outside, they were shot at from the suspect vehicle as it pulled
away. Officer Giniewicz fired back before he was hit, but the
suspects were able to escape.
Officer Giniewicz is survived by his son, two stepchildren,
mother, and six sisters.
This resolution designates the portion of Interstate 405 from
Atlantic Avenue to Cherry Avenue South in Los Angeles County as
the Signal Hill Police Officer Anthony "Tony" Giniewicz Memorial
Highway. This resolution further requests that the Department
of Transportation erect appropriate signs upon receiving
donations from non-state sources to cover the costs.
