Senate Resolution No. 58—Relative to Native American Heritage Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Throughout our country’s history, Native
2Americans have played an important role in our culture and
3success; and

4WHEREAS, The Native American community has helped
5dramatically in the preservation of tangible aspects of the heritage
6that has shaped us as a people; and

7WHEREAS, In the State of California, a state rich with
8Native-American culture and history, we are fortunate to have
9students of the Four Directions Education Organization involved
10in preserving their Native-American culture; and

11WHEREAS, Native Americans were the original inhabitants of
12the land that now constitutes the United States; and

13WHEREAS, Native Americans traditionally have exhibited a
14respect for the finiteness of natural resources through a reverence
15for the earth; and

16WHEREAS, Native Americans have made distinct and important
17contributions to the United States and the rest of the world in many
18fields, including agriculture, medicine, music, language, and art;
19and

20WHEREAS, Native Americans deserve to be recognized for
21their individual contributions to the United States as local and
22national leaders, artists, athletes, and scholars; and

23WHEREAS, This recognition will encourage self-esteem, pride,
24and self-awareness in Native Americans of all ages; and

P2    1WHEREAS, The Senate finds that it is important to celebrate
2the role of Native-American history in our community and the
3contributions that have been made by dedicated members of this
4culture; and

5WHEREAS, The Senate is honored to join all California
6residents in celebrating Native-American heritage during this
7month and encourages the preservation of this extraordinary
8culture; and

9WHEREAS, November is a time when many Americans
10commemorate a special time in the history of the United States
11when American Indians and English settlers celebrated the bounty
12of their harvest and the promise of new kinships; now, therefore,
13be it

14Resolved by the Senate of the State of California,That the Senate
15recognizes November 2014 as Native American Heritage Month;
16and be it further

17Resolved,That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
18this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
