6with an estimatedbegin delete 238,590end deletebegin insert 233,000end insert new cases of the disease in the
7United Statesbegin delete predicted forend deletebegin insert
duringend insert 2014,begin delete which would resultend delete
8begin insert resultingend insert in an estimatedbegin delete 29,720end deletebegin insert 29,480end insert deaths; and
9WHEREAS, In California, prostate cancer is the most common
10cancer among men in most racial and ethnic groups.begin delete African begin insert Incidence rates are about 60 percent higher in
11American men are 45 percent more likely to develop this disease
12than non-Hispanic white men and 58 percent more likely than
13Hispanic men;end delete
14African American men than in non-Hispanic white men;end insert and

2are predicted to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014, and,
3of this number, approximatelybegin delete 3,085end deletebegin insert 3,065 Californiaend insert men are
4predicted to die of this disease; and
5WHEREAS, The survival rate approaches 100 percent when
6prostate cancer is diagnosed and treatedbegin delete earlyend deletebegin insert early,end insert but drops to
728 percent when the disease spreads to other parts of the body;
8and
9WHEREAS, Early stages of prostate cancer usually do not have
10symptoms and genetic predisposition may be responsible for 5 to
1110 percent of prostate cancer cases; and
12WHEREAS, Recent studies suggest that a diet high in processed
13meat or dairy foods may increase the risk of prostate cancer, while
14obesity may contribute to an increased risk of more aggressive
15forms of the disease; and
16WHEREAS, Obesity and smoking are associated with an
17increased risk of dying from prostate cancer; and
18WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society recommends that
19all men be given sufficient information on both the benefits and
20limitations of early detection and testing for prostate cancer to
21allow each man to make a decision based on his personal values
22and preferences; now, therefore, be it
23Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
24thereof concurring, That the Legislature designates September
252014 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the State of
26California and encourages public officials and citizens of California
27to observe the month with appropriate activities and programs;
28and be it further
29Resolved, That the Legislature joins communities across our
30nation to increase awareness of the importance of each man making
31an informed decision with his health care provider with regard to
32early detection and testing for prostate cancer; and be it further
33Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
34this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
