SENATE VOTE : 32-0
SUBJECT : Memorial Naming
SUMMARY : Designates each of the Mad River Bridges on State
Route (SR) 101 in Humboldt County as the Bicyclist John Mello
Memorial Bridge. Specifically, this bill :
1)Describes the accomplishments and attributes of John Mello.
2)Designates each of the Mad River Bridges on SR 101 in Humboldt
County as the Bicyclist John Mello Memorial Bridge.
3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation
(Caltrans) determine the cost of the appropriate signs,
consistent with the signing requirements for a state highway
system, showing special designation and, upon receiving
donations from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect
those signs.
EXISTING LAW : Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating
and maintaining state highways including the installation and
maintenance of highway signs.
FISCAL EFFECT : Costs to make and erect appropriate signs are
covered by donations.
COMMENTS : John Mello was a loving and devoted father,
grandfather, and friend who was tragically killed in a bicycle
accident on SR 101 north of Trinidad. Mr. Mello was pursuing one
of his many interests, long-distance bicycling, when he was
fatally struck. Mr. Mello was an enthusiastic cyclist, skilled
heavy equipment mechanic and was known for his integrity,
knowledge, loyalty, humor, compassion, thoughtfulness, and
unselfish generosity. Mr. Mello is survived by his brother,
Joe, his sister, Lina, his daughter Angie, his son Brian, and
his grandchildren, Ryan, Justin, Ricky, Ariah, and Preston.
