Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 114—Relative to the James E. Machado Memorial Intersection.

SCR 114, as introduced, Gaines. James E. Machado Memorial Intersection.

This measure would designate the intersection of State Highway Route 49 and Elm Avenue in the City of Auburn as the James E. Machado Memorial Intersection. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, James E. Machado, a deputy sheriff with four years
2of service with the Placer County Sheriff’s Department, was shot
3and killed on July 13, 1978, with his own service weapon, in a
4struggle with an escaped mental patient; and

5WHEREAS, The altercation occurred on the shoulder of the
6northbound lanes of State Highway Route 49 at Elm Avenue in
7the City of Auburn; and

8WHEREAS, With the help of citizens who witnessed the
9shooting, the suspect was quickly located by officers of the
10California Highway Patrol and an officer of the Auburn Police
11Department; and

P2    1WHEREAS, The suspect confronted the responding officers
2with Deputy Machado’s service weapon, and was subsequently
3killed when the officers fired several rounds at the suspect; and

4WHEREAS, Law enforcement officers from throughout the
5state attended Deputy Machado’s funeral, and he was posthumously
6awarded the Placer County Sheriff’s Purple Heart; and

7WHEREAS, Deputy Machado was survived by his wife Nancy,
8and three children, Jim, Joy, and Jeanne’t who were 7, 3, and 1
9years of age at the time of this tragic event; and

10WHEREAS, It is therefore appropriate to designate the
11intersection of State Highway 49 and Elm Avenue in the City of
12Auburn in Deputy Machado’s honor and memory; now, therefore,
13be it

14Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
15thereof concurring,
That the intersection of State Highway 49 and
16Elm Avenue in the City of Auburn is hereby designated as the
17James E. Machado Memorial Intersection; and be it further

18Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
19to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
20signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
21special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
22sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
23further

24Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
25this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
26for appropriate distribution.
