DIGEST : This resolution designates the intersection of State
Route 49 and Elm Avenue in the City of Auburn as the James E.
Machado Memorial Intersection.
ANALYSIS : By naming this intersection for Deputy Sheriff
Machado, this resolution seeks to memorialize his sacrifice in
the line of duty.
Deputy Sheriff Machado's contributions. James Machado served
four years as a deputy sheriff in the Placer County Sheriff's
Department. On July 13, 1978, a person who had escaped from a
mental health facility struggled with Deputy Machado and killed
him with the deputy's own service weapon. The altercation
occurred on the shoulder of the northbound lanes of State Route
49 at Elm Avenue. Deputy Sheriff Machado left behind a wife and

three young children.
This resolution designates the intersection of State Route 49
and Elm Avenue in the City of Auburn as the James E. Machado
Memorial Intersection. The resolution further requests that the
Department of Transportation erect appropriate signs upon
receiving donations from non-state sources to cover the costs.
