COMMENTS : James Machado served four years as a Deputy Sheriff
in the Placer County Sheriff's Department. On July 13, 1978, a
person who had escaped from a mental health facility struggled
with Deputy Machado and killed him with the deputy's own service
weapon. The altercation occurred on the shoulder of the
northbound lanes of State Route 49 at Elm Avenue. Deputy
Machado left behind a wife and three young children. This bill
designating the intersection of SR 49 and Elm Avenue in honor of
James E. Machado acknowledges the significant role Deputy
