Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 118—Relative to military sacrifice.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SCR 118, as introduced, Anderson. Military sacrifice: remembrance.

This measure would encourage the people of California to honor our war dead on the 21st day of each month by flying the flag of the United States at half-staff in remembrance and in honor of all those who have given their lives in military service in war and pausing for a moment of silence for 21 seconds to honor our fallen heroes.

P1    1WHEREAS, Some 1.4 million American veterans have given
2their lives in the various wars in defense of freedom; and

3WHEREAS, California and the nation should honor their service
4and sacrifice in perpetuity; and

5WHEREAS, The highest salute our nation can bestow on our
6military or public officials, including the President of the United
7States, is formally known as the “21 Gun Salute,” and taking a 21
8second moment of silence is an appropriate way to honor our fallen
9solders; and

10WHEREAS, Out of the 31,536,000 seconds in a calendar year,
11252 seconds of each year shall be utilized to honor Americans who
12have given their lives defending freedom for a 21 second moment
13of silence each month, which would help this and future
14generations to understand and respect the sacrifice made by
15veterans who have given their lives; now, therefore, be it

P2    1Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
2thereof concurring,
That the Legislature encourages the people of
3California to honor our war dead on the 21st day of each month
4by flying the flag of the United States at half-staff in remembrance
5and in honor of all those who have given their lives in military
6service in war and by pausing for a moment of silence for 21
7seconds to honor our fallen heroes; and be it further

8Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
9this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
