This measure would proclaim June 2014, as Scoliosis Awareness Month.

P1 1WHEREAS, Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine
2that affects about two to three percent of the population, an
3estimated seven million people in the United States, and nearly
4one million people in California. Scoliosis affects people of all
5ages, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status, and there
6is no cure; and
7WHEREAS, It is important to increase public awareness of
8scoliosis in order to help children, parents, and health care
9providers better recognize and treat the complexities of spinal
10deformities such as scoliosis; and
11WHEREAS, Scoliosis can negatively impact a person’s quality
12of life by limiting activity, reducing respiratory function, causing
13physical pain, and diminishing self-esteem; and
14WHEREAS, Scoliosis has no known cause and is common in
15otherwise healthy children, with approximately one out of every
16six people diagnosed requiring active medical treatment; and
17WHEREAS, Scoliosis is often diagnosed between 10 and 15
18years of age, with females being five to eight times more likely to
P2 1develop a curvature severe enough to require medical attention;
2and
3WHEREAS, Screening programs are mandated in California
4schools for girls in seventh grade and boys in eighth grade. These
5programs allow for early detection of scoliosis, which, if promptly
6treated, could alleviate the pain of those suffering from the disease;
7now, therefore, be it
8Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
9thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby proclaims June
102014 as Scoliosis Awareness Month; and be it further
11Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
12this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
