                           ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION
                                Joan Buchanan, Chair
                 SB 1229 (Fuller) - As Introduced: February 20, 2014

           SENATE VOTE : 34-0

SUBJECT : Week of the School Administrator

SUMMARY : Moves the "Week of the School Administrator" from the
first full week in the month of March to the second full week in
          the month of October.

EXISTING LAW observes the importance of educational leadership
at the school, school district, and county levels by designating
the first full week in the month of March of each year as "Week
of the School Administrator." Schools, school districts, and
county superintendents of schools are encouraged to observe the
week with public recognition of the contribution that school
administrators make to successful pupil achievement.

FISCAL EFFECT : None. This bill is keyed non-fiscal by the
          Legislative Counsel.

           COMMENTS : AB 1137 (Strom-Martin), Chapter 286, Statutes of
1999, established the "Week of the School Administrator" during
the first full week in the month of March every year. During
this week, school, district and county office of education
administrators, such as principals, school business officials,
          classified administrators and other administrative
professionals, are recognized for their role in student
achievement. This bill moves this recognition to the second
full week in the month of October. March 15 is the required
statutory deadline for notifying certificated employees that
they may be released in the following school year. The author
states, "This is a time when administrators are facing difficult
decisions including reducing their teacher workforce and cutting
operational budgets. Due to the difficult and challenging
decisions school administrators must make at this time, it would
be appropriate to move the week of recognition to another time
of the year." According to the sponsor, the Association of
California School Administrators, the October date coincides
          with Boss's Day.

                                                                  Page 2

The third full week in May is "Classified School Employee Week".
Teacher appreciation week and national teacher day are also
          during the month of May.
