BILL SUMMARY:
AB 2489 (1) establishes the Family Violence Emergency
Response Team Act of 2000, (2) requires the Board of
Corrections (BOC) to award grants to county sheriffs'
departments for victim-oriented community policing projects
to provide assistance to families in crisis, and (3)
appropriates $5.5 million to BOC.

STAFF COMMENTS: SUSPENSE FILE. Among other things, the
bill:
specifies that the grants shall be awarded to county
sheriffs' departments, on a competitive basis, to expand
or establish programs designed to provide families with
immediate intervention, resource referral services,
victim assistance, threat assessment, and safety
planning,
requires BOC to develop an evaluation design to assess
the effectiveness of a program in curbing family
violence,
requires BOC to report to the Legislature by June 30,
2002, and annually thereafter,
authorizes BOC to retain up to 5% of the amount
appropriated for administrative costs, the evaluation,
and providing technical assistance to counties, and
contains related legislative findings.
