An act to add Section 13603 to the Penal Code, relating to
correctional officers.
LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
SB 12, as introduced, Rainey. Correctional officers: training.
Existing law requires the Department of Corrections to design and
deliver training programs for correctional officers. In addition,
the Commission on Correctional Peace Officers' Standards and Training
(CPOST) is required to develop, approve, and monitor standards for
the training of state correctional peace officer apprentices and an
advanced curricula for state correctional peace officers and
supervisors. A correctional peace officer is required to complete
this advanced training upon promotion.
This bill would require the department, to the extent funding is
appropriated, to provide 24 weeks of training to each correctional
officer cadet, to be completed prior to the cadet's assignment to a
post or position as a correctional peace officer.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. Section 13603 is added to the Penal Code, to read:
13603. The Department of Corrections shall provide twenty-four
(24) weeks of training to each correctional officer cadet, to the
extent funding is appropriated for the purpose of this section. This
training shall be provided by the department and completed by the
cadet prior to the cadet's assignment to a post or position as a
correctional peace officer.
